In January 2014 our musical director, Kate Challinor-Moss (aka Queen Bee), along with 12 ladies from Chesterfield and North Derbyshire gathered together for the first Honey Belles rehearsal, in a small room in the beautiful village of Ashover. Some years later 50 rowdy ladies meet, laugh, sing and cry at our bigger rehearsal venue in the heart of Chesterfield.
We are a three part harmony choir – Altos, Mezzos and Sopranos, however we have dabbled with more harmony sections, thanks to our exciting brush with Gareth Malone in 2016. We sing a variety of music genres including musicals, 80s classics and modern pop. We also have some very talented choir members who enable us to arrange music. This allows us to mash our favourite songs together.
Our very first performance, way back in 2014, was set in the idyllic Ashover Village at their May Day Carnival. ‘California Dreamin’ was delivered to an unsuspecting audience. We still remain a firm favourite at the carnival, but times have moved on and since then we have had big annual concerts, appeared on the BBC, collaborated with Brass Bands, discovered some amazing solo talent within the choir and recorded our music to CD.
Our families are our biggest fans and our children know our music better than we do. So when an opportunity arose to put some of children together, the ‘Mini Belles’ was born. To have 50 Honey Belles on stage with 20 Mini Belles is quite a sight and we make a great sound.
No 2 years have been the same thus far and there is no intention to do so in the future. We are always on the look out for new collaborations, projects and opportunities. We thrive on challenge and this keeps the group fresh and exciting. Long may this continue.
